At twenty-two, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother’s death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life. With no experience or training, driven only by blind will, she would hike more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State—and she would do it alone. Told with suspense and style, sparkling with warmth and humor, Wild powerfully captures the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddened, strengthened, and ultimately healed her.

I had never heard of the Pacific Crest Trail before picking up this book, but I know that after finishing it I have added it to my travel bucket list. The story is told in first person by the author, Cheryl Strayed. She writes in a way that is so open and honest, something I appreciated. It gives the reader a chance to relate to her emotions, even if you haven’t faced the same troubles in life.

The book centers around Cheryl and her journey to come to terms with the loss of her mother and the dispersion of her family afterwards. I was impressed with the realness of her book: she admits being unprepared and underestimating the trail, and the multiple times she almost gave up, but she also describes her victories and times of persistence.

She has the ability to recount her experiences on the trail and the people she met along the way. They bring fun interactions while she is on the trail, and while she enjoys their company, she remains true to the purpose of her journey: to walk this trail alone and search for answers.

It’s a quick read, and a book that will pull you in from the very first page. It’s full of pain, hope, determination and perseverance, and one that I recommend to everyone.
